Fire Up Your Feet and Kaiser Permanente Reward Active Kids and Families

More than $10,000 to be Awarded to Local Schools This Spring

As the national spotlight turns to increasing physical activity in schools and combating childhood obesity, Fire Up Your Feet offers students and their families new opportunities for physical activity before, during and after school. The program is a partnership between the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and Kaiser Permanente.

“Fire Up Your Feet is a leap forward in creating positive, early experiences to ensure that every child can achieve 60 minutes of physical activity a day, said Beth Richards, development and marketing director, Safe Routes to School National Partnership. “At the same time, the initiative encourages schools and communities to be designed to foster safe, convenient, and fun ways to move.”

“One in five of our members spends the majority of their day in a school, as educators, staff members or students,” said Daniel Field, director, Community Benefit and External Affairs with Kaiser Permanente Northwest. “That is why we are so committed to supporting a culture of health in our schools. Fire Up Your Feet is a great tie-in to our efforts to create healthy learning environments for kids.”

This spring, more than $10,000 will be awarded to participating Oregon and Southwest Washington K-8 schools. The Spring Challenge takes place May 1-31, and registration is now open at Fireupyourfeet.org. Students, families and school staff at local K-8 schools can sign up, start tracking their activities and help their school earn awards. The challenge is open to K-8 schools in Oregon as well as the following counties in Washington: Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, Skamania and Wahkiakum.

Any physical activity counts toward a Challenge Award during the tracking period. Challenge Awards must be used toward activities or items related to a school’s health and wellness goals, such as supporting walking school bus programs or the purchase of bike racks or safety vests.

Thousands of students, families and school staff at more than 400 schools around the country participated in the Fall 2013 Fire Up Your Feet Activity Challenge, earning more than $35,000 in awards. More than $70,000 will be awarded to schools nationally this spring.
