SALT Partners with Higher Education to Tackle Student Debt During Financial Literacy Month

SALT, a leading financial education program created by the nonprofit American Student Assistance, is partnering with local higher education institutions and organizations to offer a number of free financial literacy resources and workshops to Vancouver residents throughout Financial Literacy Month.

“Loans are a reality for most students,” said Paul Combe, President of American Student Assistance. “Our personally tailored counseling alleviates this burden by ensuring students get the proper support network to face their debt head-on, make wiser decisions and take advantage of many existing remedies.”

Simply by visiting saltmoney.org/vancouverUSA, residents can register for a free membership with the SALT program. Throughout April, Vancouver SALT members who complete at least one module of the SALT “My Money 101″ personal finance curriculum receive a free movie voucher to Kiggins Theatre.NewsletterStudent debt now exceeds one trillion dollars, slowing the economy and becoming an issue of nationwide concern. As many as one in three student loan borrowers are delinquent on payment of 90 days or more—delaying the ability to buy homes, cars or any other consumer purchases typically associated with starting out in life. The SALT program combines online tools and one-on-one personal interactions to deliver neutral guidance, engaging content and loan repayment support in a simple, useful and motivating experience.

SALT features include the “My Money 101″ online personal finance curriculum; a Repayment Navigator to track loans and compare repayment plans; search engines for scholarships and careers/internships; as well as blogs, articles, videos, calculators, tools and apps that teach users how to responsibly pay for and repay college costs while building financial skills for life.

SALT works with several Vancouver-area institutions and organizations, including Clark College, Washington State University, Community Housing Resource Center, Washington State GEAR UP, Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington and the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce — all of which collaborated on a co-branded portal to the SALT website specifically for Vancouver residents. LULAC of Southwest Washington also recently joined SALT to promote the importance of financial education and SALT resources to Vancouver’s Spanish-speaking community.

Leading up to Financial Literacy Month, Washington State University Vancouver presented financial literacy concepts to students at Fort Vancouver High School. Washington State GEAR UP has registered nearly 500 new SALT members through its Financial Literacy Month outreach efforts.
