Winter nights are long and dark in the Pacific Northwest. Before electric lights, the moon and the stars lit the countryside. Unfortunately, in the Pacific Northwest the winter skies are usually clouded over. So, against the midwinter dark, lanterns and candles glowed in the Hudson’s Bay Company Fort and the adjacent village. The fur bearing animals they trapped were gone into hiding, and it was damp and cold. There was little work to be done.
Time to celebrate!
