Dating After Divorce

According to licensed psychologist, Dr. Bart Fowler of Charis Counseling in Vancouver, second marriages have an approximate 33 percent success rate which drops to 27 percent for third marriages.

“That’s a select group of people so if you want to be a part of that, you have to work on things being different.” Dr. Fowler says.

It’s been Dr. Fowler’s observation that most people begin dating too soon. He stressed that it’s about focusing on key personal improvements. “We all tend to repeat patterns in our personal lives and with others.”

He recommends joining a divorce recovery group, seeking professional counseling and enlisting the advice of friends who treat others with respect and maturity. Support groups offer third-person perspectives, challenge attendees to identify their strengths and weaknesses and even help with strategies for handling conflict that will inevitably arise in future relationships from romantic to extended family to child rearing.
