No, Your Situation is Not Different

It would be difficult to find someone in Clark County who reads more parenting literature than myself. It’s jst part of both my jobs, plus my friends and family would surely tell you that I’m a little obsessed with parenting techniques and programs. With Supernanny available on Hulu, and online articles and blogs everywhere you Google, why are so many of us finding the job of parenting so difficult? The answer lies in how we view others versus ourselves. While we can be overly harsh on ourselves in many areas, when it comes to the hard work of parenting, we often give ourselves a pass. We know that we need to follow through with the threatened consequence, but that would be too exhausting. We know that the kids should be eating healthier foods, but there’s no time to cook from scratch. Our situation is different from that of everyone else who seems to be able to do it all. But the truth is, being a good parent is hard work, and incredibly inconvenient. Your situation is not different from everyone else’s–“they” have just decided to roll up their sleeves and do the hard work. And ask any great parent of grown children–the payoff is worth everything!
