A Focus on Women’s Health: Life Stages, Prevention and Ongoing Care
Table of Contents
Paying attention to health is crucial for everyone, but it holds particular significance for women. Women experience life stages such as menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, each bringing distinct health challenges and requirements.
These stages can affect everything from mental health to cardiovascular health, making it essential for women to be proactive in managing their well-being. Women are also more prone to certain conditions like osteoporosis, breast cancer and autoimmune diseases, which often require a tailored approach to health care.
Regular check-ins with doctors are vital for women to maintain optimal health. These visits allow for early detection and prevention of potential health issues, ensuring timely intervention and treatment. These appointments also provide an opportunity for women to discuss concerns or symptoms, receive personalized advice and stay informed about the latest health recommendations. By prioritizing regular medical check-ups, women can take charge of their health and lead healthier lives.
As an OB-GYN at Kaiser Permanente’s Salmon Creek Medical Office in Vancouver, WA, I recommend three tips for health care issues to focus on.
What types of preventive screenings should be top of mind for women?

Cervical cancer screening (Pap smear with human papillomavirus testing) and breast cancer screening. Cervical cancer screening starts at age 21 and is recommended every 3-5 years if results are normal. Breast cancer screening typically starts around ages 40-45, but can be earlier depending on risk factors. Please talk to your doctor about your options for preventive care.
As women age, what health symptoms and issues should they pay attention to?
An issue that can arise as women age is abnormal uterine bleeding or postmenopausal bleeding. Abnormal uterine bleeding describes bleeding that is too frequent, prolonged, heavy, or even absent for premenopausal women. Any bleeding after menopause needs evaluation.
What are your top suggestions for healthy habits that women should incorporate into their daily lives?
I would suggest developing habits that prioritize mental and physical health. Each part of the body is interconnected and can affect each other. Healthy habits can include routine exercise, a healthy diet, meditation, therapy, developing friendships and decreasing stress. Ultimately, it is about finding what works best for you and something that you can do consistently.
